I've always been opposed to using the term for a clergyman. But perhaps I don't understand the reasoning.

Can anyone explain?

I can agree with you, and I have no explanation. In other words, this post is a waste of electrons. ;-)

Hey, you should probably call no man "father." ;-)

So is that supposed to be a strict proscription against calling someone "father" or a reminder that our earthly relatives will never love us as our heavenly father can?

No one I know avoids the word for their sire.

No, it's not a strict proscription against using the term. However, given Jesus' use of the term in a metaphorical sense, it makes me wonder why Christians have taken to calling ministers father. It's like the one term that is deemed inappropriate.

Because most priests fail to properly differentiate God's will from their own?

But more seriously, reverend is as generic an honorific as you'll get, allowing us to offer respect for the position without condoning it's stances. American religion is very electrified politically, and some rubber coated buffer-words are useful.

Generally even a crazy clergy-person in a crazy religion believing crazy things deserves a touch of respect, because by joining the clergy they're making more of a spiritual effort than myself. But I can't call the Ralian leader "pastor," because I'd never join his flock of seagulls.
